Assignment for Wednesday, June 20: Studios and Spray Paint

some Flux-ers

Good morning, explorers!

I am super excited about today’s assignment because it’s all about artists doing awesome and unconventional things. I want you to go to Long Island City (which is kind of confusing because it’s actually in Queens — not Long Island!) and investigate what’s happening in the burgeoning art scene over there.

Flux Factory

First stop: Flux Factory. Flux Factory is a space where artists get together and produce really amazing and totally unique art pieces, like a conceptual reality game show, a huge sculpture about a made-up pineapple factory, and an exhibition about some of the weird ways people grow plants (bonus trend: terrariums!). The idea behind Flux is for artists to collaborate and work in lots of different mediums — like film, painting, graphic design, and music — all at once. The results are pretty impressive.

And then I want you to check out the 5Pointz Aerosol Art Center, Inc., a.k.a., 5Pointz.

5Pointz is an outdoor art exhibit space covered by amazing graffiti created by people all around the world. How cool is that?

Pay close attention to all the art you see. What do you like? Why do you like it? And, do you notice any overlaps between the exhibitions at Flux and any of the aerosol artwork at 5Pointz?

It’s supposed to be really hot today, so don’t forget to drink lots of water. Other than that, take notes, stay curious, and, of course, have fun!

Until tomorrow…
