style.com: fashion’s top partiers

THE BOOM BOOM GENERATION
who partied like a fashion rock star in 2009?

A few weeks ago, we posited a theory that parties had supplanted runway shows as the main event. If that’s true, then the men and women featured here are among the most influential in fashion. Because, while repeat party attendance may look frivolous to some, it is, in fact, work. Everyone is promoting something, whether a clothing line, a magazine, or just a personal brand of fabulousness. What sets the people on this list apart, by and large, is that they’re actually having a good time while they’re at it. Here, the fashion world’s top partiers, as chosen by Style.com and ranked according to rigorous statistical analysis (i.e., the number of photos each has on PatrickMcMullan.com).

Best Group Odds: The Niarcho-Leptics

PatrickMcMullan.com Stats: Stavros Niarchos, 38 pictures; PC Valmorbida, 32; Andy Valmorbida, 66; Vladimir Restoin-Roitfeld, 76

As any fashion girl will tell you, straight men are harder to find in this business than Hermès on sale. That’s why the party scene’s reigning (and, really, only) crew of hetero pals is never short of female companionship. Ringmaster Stavros Niarchos has been linked to just about everyone from Paris to Petra. Of the brothers PC and Andy Valmorbida, the latter’s been spotted with Lindsay Lohan, and Vladimir Restoin-Roitfeld has replaced gal pal Lily Donaldson with Giovanna Battaglia. Though Niarchos has been nominated to the Vanity Fair Best-Dressed List, the posse’s party look is perhaps best described as schleppy chic: uncombed hair, stubble, ski caps. On special occasions, expect a dress shirt, unbuttoned to reveal patchy chest hair.

Art Darling: Shala Monroque

PMc Stats: 97 pictures

She’s not a model, the daughter of a rock star, or the heir to a Euro fortune, so why was Shala Monroque suddenly at all the right parties on both sides of the pond this fall? There’s her enviable closet full of Prada, Miu Miu, and Christopher Kane, and her new gig as editor at large of Pop hasn’t hurt her profile, either. But what really sealed the deal was the shindig she hosted for the mag with her boyfriend, Larry Gagosian, at their Upper East Side townhouse in September. The Picasso-lined walls and the glass dance floor they installed over the indoor pool ensured it was the most coveted invite of New York fashion week. There hasn’t been an art couple this glam since Peter Brant and Stephanie Seymour started slinging expensive Connecticut mud at each other.

The Camera-Ready Couple: Sean Lennon and Kemp Muhl

PMc Stats: Sean Lennon, 141 pictures; Kemp Muhl, 53

Vlad and Giovanna. Jefferson and Anouck. There’s plenty of competition in the It couple category, but racing up the charts are Sean Lennon and Kemp Muhl, a duo who appear to love the camera as much as it loves them. The rock progeny and his lithesome musician/model girlfriend presumably knew they were inviting invective when they re-created John and Yoko’s iconic Rolling Stones cover for lensman Terry Richardson, with Muhl playing the part of the stripped-down Beatle. The photograph, published in Purple magazine, generated “vehement hate mail,” Lennon has said. Still, it hasn’t dampened the pair’s enthusiasm for provocative poses in public (see left).

The Best Friend: Olivier Zahm

PMc Stats: 210 pictures

Consider, if you will, the trademark Olivier Zahm photo pose. In it, the disarming Frenchman cozies up to a very of-the-moment, temporarily sweaty PYT, drapes his arm over her shoulder, and captures the moment on his camera from above, one-handed. They’re like middle school Facebook photos, except Zahm snaps his at Le Baron and the Boom Boom Room…and voilà, gritty glamour ensues. The results can be seen on Purple Diary, his often NSFW online journal. But make no mistake; beneath the louche affect, there is some serious indie mag brand-building going on. Say fromage, girls.

The Closet Case: Daphne Guinness

PMc Stats: 221 pictures

This perfumer/muse/collaboratrice has a sample-size frame so clothes-friendly she’s starred in two Vogue Italia editorials and walked Giles Deacon’s Spring 2010 runway. And with so many couture creations to slip into, how could she possibly stay at home? We spotted her getting down at Alexander Wang’s garage party this year (more on that blowout later), and she and pal Steven Klein always make a striking counterpoint to the floral- and seersucker-attired guests at the photographer’s summer parties in Bridgehampton. A sighting of Guinness’ signature swept-back badger coif is usually a sign that you’ve arrived at the right place.

The International: Suzy Menkes

PMc Stats: 233 pictures

Long before bloggers’ twitpics captured the runway looks in real time, Suzy Menkes was tapping out reviews on her laptop from the front row. Pragmatic time management makes sense for the fashion editor of the International Herald Tribune: Menkes rarely misses a runway show, and with her nose for news, she’s loath to skip a fashion week fête. A famously acerbic wit, she always seems simultaneously delighted and appalled by what she finds on the party circuit. Here she is at Mario Testino’s sweltering Paris shindig for his new book MaRIO DE JANEIRO Testino, posing gamely next to a dancer who is, for all intents and purposes, naked. The young lady did have an impressive feather headdress, but it was no match for Menkes’ trademark mini-pompadour.

Master of Sweat: Alexander Wang

PMc Stats: 262 pictures

Alexander Wang canceled his Fall 2009 after-party, and the pent-up demand for one of his sweaty, hot, cramped, awesome post-show dance-a-thons had the line for this September’s gas station blowout snaking around the MePa block. Cool kids from Kirsten Dunst to Jared Leto raided the candy shelves at the 14th Street filling station and rocked out to Courtney Love and Santigold. Perhaps Tavi, the 13-year-old Style Rookie blogger, summed it up best on her site: “[Wang] jumped into [Love’s] arms onstage, which made me die. I’m considering taking Alexander Wang and Courtney Love to court for murder.” We think she has a case.

Our Lady of 1,000 Dresses: Lauren Santo Domingo

PMc Stats: 268 pictures

We’re not kidding. Vogue contributing editor and infrequent outfit repeater Lauren Santo Domingo probably has at least that many frocks in her walk-in closet. LSD attends so many parties in so many looks because she’s in equal demand on the gala circuit (outfit option: Chanel) and the downtown scene (outfit option: Balmain). And to be fair, she has no problem with outfit repeating. She wore the same ruched Altuzarra dress on Fashion’s Night Out and to the Whitney Art Party, among other events, and lived to blog the tale.

Resident Beefcake: Lorenzo Martone

PMc Stats: 440 pictures

Call him a brand ambassador. Brazilian hottie Lorenzo Martone is Marc Jacobs’ unofficial spokesmodel, gracing parties when his better half is busy setting trends. More often than not he’s wearing something designed by his partner (pieces from the Louis Vuitton Stephen Sprouse collection are on heavy rotation), but he has been known to change it up…sort of. At the Cinema Society screening of He’s Just Not That Into You, he rocked Henry Holland’s “Do Me in the Park Marc” T-shirt. Rumors of the couple’s marriage were confirmed and denied on repeat all summer, but we have a feeling that Martone likes a good bash too much to do something under the radar.

The Man of Many Parts: Waris Ahluwalia

PMc Stats: 518 pictures

Now that he’s a CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalist, we’ve spotted Waris Ahluwalia out on the town more than ever lately, customary glass of mineral water in hand. For Halloween he co-hosted a shindig at the Wooly, the new private event space dreamed up by his sometime collaborator Eric Adolfsen. A few nights before that, he showed off his latest Omnia Vincit Amor jewelry collection at Phillips de Pury. And just last week, he was the guest of honor at a party hosted by the permanent representative of India to the United Nations, Ambassador Hardeep Singh Puri, in celebration of the new Assouline book he co-edited, To India With Love. An actor in one of his other lives, Ahluwalia gives the impression that he could take or leave the scene, while being firmly at the center of it.

The DJ With a Face for Pictures: Leigh Lezark

PMc Stats: 604 pictures

It used to be you couldn’t get a picture of Leigh Lezark without her DJs in crime Geordon Nicol and Greg Krelenstein (not) smiling next to her. Nowadays, Lezark and her signature black slash haircut and porcelain skin are recognizable enough to fly solo. And fly she does—to Paris, where you’ll spot her front-row at Chanel (she’s one of the brand’s beauty ambassadors) and partying after dark with Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci. But that’s not to say that she’s lost her street cred. Just last Thursday she was working the tables with her fellow MisShapes at the Angel Orensanz Foundation on the Lower East Side. Yes, it was a YSL fragrance launch, but still.

The Family Envoys: Margherita, Julia, and Alice

PMc Stats: Margherita Missoni, 625 pictures; Julia Restoin-Roitfeld, 532; Alice Dellal, 17

Among the Euro set, filial loyalty runs deep. On Fashion’s Night Out, Margherita Missoni (uniform: long and flowy Missoni, naturally) gamely manned her family’s flagship boutique on Madison Avenue, chatting with fans and posing for pictures. As for Julia Restoin-Roitfeld (uniform: L.B.D. + blazer), she may be an art director in her own right, but with her sexy yet unstudied look, she’s also a roving representative for the Paris Vogue brand. British/Brazilian real estate heiress Alice Dellal (uniform: shaved head, crop top, studded jacket) serves as her family’s steward across the pond, frequenting New York hot spots and inspiring a slew of half-shorn imitators. Their mamas (inveterate party girls, themselves) must be proud.

The Bandleader: Karl Lagerfeld

PMc Stats: 972 pictures

It’s well documented that Karl Lagerfeld has more energy than a roomful of raving teenagers. As methodical in his approach to parties as to every other aspect of his busy life, the designer has created a coterie of international PYTs to party with him: Jen Brill, Poppy Delevingne, and the rest of Chanel’s beauty ambassadors are basically on call to ensure the Kaiser is never trapped near the dessert station by someone old and un-fabulous. With his posse securely in place (plus musical accompaniment from hot acts he can summon right out of the floor, Lagerfeld remains an unstoppable force.

The Good Times in Real Time Reporter: Derek Blasberg

PMc Stats: 1,167 pictures

If a party takes place and no one tweets about it, did it ever really happen? Fortunately, we may never have to answer that question, thanks to the fashion set’s unofficial Boswell and Style.com contributing editor Derek Blasberg. Whether reporting from the Paris couture, Fashion Rocks in Rio, or his dentist’s waiting room on a trip home to St. Louis, @dizzyblazeberg can be relied on to keep the world informed via a stream of witty and shockingly lucid tweets.

The Face You Can’t Escape: Lindsay Lohan

PMc Stats: 1,318 pictures

We’ll leave the speculation about the health risks involved in a nocturnal lifestyle to others, but the stats don’t lie. Lohan’s appointment as artistic adviser to the house of Ungaro has hardly put a crimp in her partying ways, but then again, they didn’t hire her because she was a shrinking violet.
