Uber Chic: Berlin’s Top Fashion Designers’ Favourite Spots
by alison baenen

We checked in with three of our favourite designers from Mercedes-Benz Berlin Fashion Week for a guide to the coolest beer halls, bookstores, clubs, getaways and cafes in Germany’s fashion capital. Here’s what’s hot.

Lala Berlin’s Leyla Piedayesh

For super-luxe knits and schoolgirl-sexy separates, Leyla Piedayesh is the girl to see for uber-chic interpretations of knitting and purling. A former MTV VJ, Iranian-born Piedayesh is the designer behind local cult-fave label Lala Berlin, and her self-taught knitting skills (inspired by wrist warmers she spotted at a Berlin flea market) have earned her fans from Mischa Barton to Claudia Schiffer. A party girl with a love of comfort, Piedayesh’s vote for the best place in Berlin to unwind was supremely fitting: “Home sweet home.”

Michael Michalsky

While most men would be content with “Worldwide Creative Director” on their CVs, former Adidas chief Michael Michalsky left that gig (after securing ongoing collaborations for the company with Y-3 and Stella McCartney, no less) to design under his own name. A former Levi’s designer, Michalsky undoubtedly knows his denim, but the London-trained pro has his sights set on day to evening domination. And while Michalsky may be biased when he claims his standalone boutique on Berlin’s fashionable Monbijouplatz is the city’s best shopping destination, we’re sure plenty of his devotees would agree.

Frida Weyer

Whether you’re looking for a climate neutral t-shirt or a thigh-grazing cocktail frock, Berlin-native Frida Weyer has got you covered (just barely, in the case of those dresses). The organic tees she produces under her MarchMellow label are fair trade and sustainably produced (read: wind and solar power only), and the looks she showed this season at the Chamäleon Varieté Theatre for her ready-to-wear line were as daring as the trapeze artist who started the show.
