In these fractious times, it sometimes seems that no one can agree on anything. Fortunately, there are exceptions. For example, who doesn’t worship Julie Christie? Certainly, there was no shortage of fans at the Cinema Society screening of her new film, Away From Her, on Wednesday night. Sandra Bernhard, Kim Cattrall, and Ugly Betty’s Eric Mabius all came out for the Doctor Zhivago and Darling star, whose performance as an Alzheimer’s patient in indie actress Sarah Polley’s first movie as director is generating plenty of critical buzz. “She’s someone who’s incapable of being dishonest on film,” gushed Debra Messing, “which is what we all strive for.” Christie’s biggest supporter was Polley herself, who said she relied on “dogged persistence” to get the elusive actress to agree to the role. “She has this magical presence on screen,” Polley said of her leading lady. “She also has this fierce intelligence, and I thought the character needed that strange combination.”

Meanwhile at Chelsea’s Metropolitan Pavilion, Teen Vogue hosted A Mother-Daughter Evening to raise funds for model Liya Kebede’s maternity and child health foundation. “I’ve only got boys,” declared Aerin Lauder Zinterhofer, the event’s honorary chair. “But I’m here to support Liya.” Being a mom or a daughter wasn’t a requirement for the guests, who included Anna Sui, Behnaz Sarafpour, and Phillip Lim, but many mothers—including Meredith Vieira and Amanda Cutter Brooks—came out with their girls. The evening’s highlight was a live auction of outfits modeled by the likes of Anna Baryshnikov, Samantha Perelman, and Josephine and Cecilia Becker—the teenage offspring of Mikhail Baryshnikov, Ron Perelman, and Vera Wang, respectively. Dresses by Thakoon and Michael Kors, who played the role of auctioneer and sweetened the deal for his frock with two tickets to his Spring/Summer 2008 show, attracted the highest bids, and helped bring the evening’s total earnings to $94,000.
